EPUB or PDF: choose the right book format

The best format depends on your device and the edition. Before downloading, decide whether you want comfortable continuous reading, the appearance of the original pages, or a quick look in your browser.

Why EPUB often works well for novels

Reflowable EPUB lets a compatible reading app adjust text size and line length to the screen. That usually makes it convenient for long passages on a small device. Some EPUBs use fixed layouts, so the extension alone does not guarantee resizable text. Check how the particular edition behaves in your reader.

When PDF is useful

PDF preserves a page layout and can be helpful for illustrations, tables or reference to printed pages. A PDF may contain selectable text or only scanned images. Search and accessibility depend on the file, its text recognition and its structure. Zooming a dense scan on a phone can make a long reading session inconvenient.

Use the filters without losing good editions

Search the title first with All formats selected. Then choose EPUB or PDF. An empty PDF filter does not mean the book is unavailable: try Read online or View item / files. Some libraries expose their file options only on their own item page.

Compare available Frankenstein editions, or use the public-domain book guide to choose a source.

Download, reading page and loan are different

A file link opens a source-provided download or file URL. Read online opens the text or a reading-edition page. View item / files opens a catalog item with further options. Check borrowing opens a lending page where an account or availability check may be required. An audiobook ZIP contains audio; it is not an EPUB or PDF.
